Tom Amone secures NRL release as ex-Leigh man set for immediate Super League switch

- 05/10/2024 - Rugby League - Betfred Super League Semi Final - Wigan Warriors v Leigh Leopards - The Brick Community Stadium, Wigan, England - Leigh's Tom Amone dejected after his side's loss to Wigan.

Former Super League Dream Team prop Tom Amone is set to make an immediate return to the competition after his NRL release.

Amone was one of the most dominant props in Super League in 2024, earning him both a berth in the Dream Team and a move to the NRL.

Signing with Canterbury Bulldogs, their supremo Gus Gould labelled him the ‘best forward in Super League’, and it was somewhat hard to argue with that.

Despite that, Amone is yet to make his NRL debut for the Bulldogs with the former Leigh man plying his trade in the reserve grade so far this season.

It’s now been confirmed that he will not make his NRL debut for the Bulldogs with the club announcing that the former Leopard has been released from his contract with immediate effect, in order for Amone to take up a deal elsewhere.

Whilst Canterbury stop short of confiming that Amone will be taking up a deal in Super League, as Newcastle Knights did when they announced the exit of Will Pryce, it’s widely expected that the prop will be returning to England in the coming days and weeks.

The statement from the Bulldogs read: “Tom Amone has been granted an immediate release from his contract with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.

“The Club has agreed to terms with Amone, granting the release so he can take up an opportunity at another Club.

“The Club wishes him and his family all the best for the future.”

A number of clubs have been linked with the 29-year-old, including his former side Leigh Leopards, whilst Warrington Wolves and Hull KR have also been thrown into the mix.

Neither Wire or KR have an open overseas quota spot so they won’t be in consideration for a move in 2025, however, they could make a play for 2026 should their quota situation change.
