Throwback: Alex Murphy threatens to sack every Wigan player

In the 1982/83 season Wigan were coached by the legendary Alex Murphy in the days of winter rugby, winning pay, beers and boggy pitches.

Just four days after a disappointing 17-7 defeat in the first round of the Challenge Cup to Castleford, Murphy’s Wigan hosted Hull KR in the league.

Sitting in fifth position, a win would take the cherry and whites up to second and as they prepared for the big game, Granada TV’s ‘RL Action’ filmed inside the changing room.

Murphy addressed the Wigan players with an expectant attitude after their cup exit and demanded a response against a strong Rovers team.

Unfortunately he didn’t get it and as the TV cameras were again given access to the sheds at Central Park, Murphy unleashed on his players after the 21-5 defeat. Watch below…

Wigan drew their final match 6-all against eventually Premiership winners Widnes and finished the 1982/83 campaign in third position.

They did however win the John Player Trophy that season, beating Leeds 15-4 in the final at Elland Road.
