Three Wigan Warriors players who could be surprise packages in 2025

Wigan Warriors

Ahead of the 2025 season, we’ve looked at three Wigan Warriors players who could be surprise packages in Super League.

Wigan were the team who could not be toppled in 2024 with the Warriors claiming every piece of silverware that they could, starting in February with the World Club Challenge and running through to October and the Grand Final.

On their way, they picked up the Challenge Cup and the League Leaders Shield to etch an incredible season into the history books – something that saw them recognised as the Sports Personality Team of the Year.

Looking forward, the club seems to be in dynasty mode with their squad building primarily focused on retainment and tying down their star players. Among those who signed long-term deals in 2024 were Bevan French, Jai Field, Junior Nsemba, Liam Marshall and importantly their coach Matt Peet.

Securing such talents in a salary cap sport is restrictive and that’s seen Wigan’s recruitment limited to just one signing – George Hirst from Oldham with the forward set to return to the Roughyeds on loan.

With no new faces coming in, Wigan could rely on a handful of youngsters to play prominent roles and we’ve picked out three who could be surprise packages.

Jacob Douglas

20-year-old winger Jacob Douglas is someone who could get more chances in 2025 after debuting for the club last season. The winger bagged a try on debut against Warrington Wolves before featuring against Hull FC later in the year as well.

He could add to those two Super League appearances given the club’s lack of depth at the position with just starters Abbas Miski and Liam Marshall ahead of him meaning that the speedster will certainly be in Matt Peet’s plans.

Jack Farrimond

Farrimond also debuted in 2024, however, he played eight games as he deputised in the halves with plenty of success. His crowning moment came at Magic Weekend when he danced through to score in a 20-0 victory over St Helens, sparking memories of 2012 when Sam Tomkins did similar in the same fixture.

Farrimond will be firmly behind stars Harry Smith and Bevan French but he’ll be afforded chances to develop and should injuries occur then he’ll be the man called upon, particularly now that Ryan Hampshire is no longer at the club.

Sam Walters

Whilst Farrimond and Douglas are just 19 and 20, Sam Walters is 24 but he’s still a baby as forwards go. He made 15 appearances during his maiden season with Wigan Warriors, often stuck behind captain Liam Farrell and rising star Junior Nsemba, but when called upon Walters impressed.

His performance in the play-off semi-final against Leigh saw him bag a brace and he was incredibly unlucky to fall out of the 17-man squad for the Grand Final but that highlights the depth that Wigan have. Expect him to climb up that depth chart this year and find himself as a mainstay in the squad by the end of the season.
