Three Super League clubs who could realistically sign Luke Thompson

It was reported that Wigan Warriors were interested in a sensational move for Canterbury Bulldogs prop and England international Luke Thompson.

Thompson won the Grand Final with St Helens in 2019 winning the Harry Sunderland Award as Man of the Match against Salford Red Devils and has starred for England since then.

There have been constant questions over whether he would return to Super League since his NRL move to Canterbury Bulldogs in 2020.

He was linked with a return to St Helens or a move to Leeds Rhinos or Warrington Wolves.

Now injured, more questions have been raised about his future in the NRL and Wigan have put in a huge offer according to the Mole who reported:

“The Bulldogs are in danger of losing star Englishman Luke Thompson for next season.

“Thompson has been sorely missed by the club in the early rounds, sidelined with a serious foot injury suffered at training in February.

“But the 27-year-old remains a key figure at Belmore and is expected to be back on the park in a month or so.

“Thompson comes off contract at the end of the season and has received a massive four-year deal from the rich Wigan club.

“It’s money the Bulldogs can’t match – despite Thompson’s current contract being worth $800,000 a season – so ultimately it will come down to whether he wants to stay in Australia for the lifestyle or return home to take up a deal that will secure his future long-term.”

There has been talk today that Leeds Rhinos could consider an offer for the prop as well.

When asked about the potential move to Wigan, Canterbury chief Phil Gould shot down the suggestion.

On Twitter, he said: “As far as I know, Luke wanted to get back to playing before deciding anything about his future. There have been no contract discussions with us to this stage.”

It is believed that his huge wage could be key in determining his future with the Bulldogs likely unable to keep paying him the $800,000.

With a Super League move possible, which clubs could be interested?

Wigan Warriors
The club that has been linked with Thompson. The Warriors are set to lose Brad Singleton to Salford Red Devils in 2024 and the future of Mike Cooper is up in the air after his ACL injury.

Warrington Wolves
Likewise the future of Josh McGuire is up in the air after a 12 match ban. A club never afraid of a big signing from down under, Thompson would be a brilliant signing.

Leeds Rhinos
The Rhinos have confirmed that they are in the market for a new middle especially with Sam Walters headed to Wigan in 2024. Thus, Thompson would be a brilliant signing.
