St Helens have already confirmed their squad numbers for the 2023 season as they go in search of a fifth consecutive Super League title as new coach Paul Wellens takes the reigns.
They gave the number five shirt, previously held by Regan Grace, to young Grand Final try scorer Jon Bennison but left the number 25 shirt open as they go in search of a domestic signing likely to be cover for the backs.
So, here’s three players St Helens could sign to fill this spot.
Tee Ritson
Perhaps the most likely signing if Barrow Raiders flyer Tee Ritson. The winger has shone in 2022 scoring tries for fun and being nominated for Championship Player of the Year. He caught the eye against Huddersfield Giants in the Challenge Cup and is very much in the mould of Grace.
Ryan Hampshire
There are plenty of free agents knocking around at the moment and plenty of backs including the versatile Ryan Hampshire following his departure from Castleford Tigers. Capable of playing fullback, wing and also in the halves, he would be an ideal signing providing cover for a number of positions which will be key with the Saints having limited options in the halves.
Matty Russell
Matty Russell is another free agent looking for a new club in 2023 and the winger’s explosivity and ability to cover at fullback would make him an ideal squad player at St Helens.
