The two clubs that have failed to sign Wigan Warriors star Bevan French

Bevan French is world class there is no doubt about that.

So, there’s perhaps no wonder that he is a man in demand with a new story almost emanating every day about where his future lies.

But, wind the clock back 12 months and the Wigan Warriors star almost left the club, according to the Daily Telegraph.

According to that publication, two clubs failed to sign French at that time as he returned to Australia for personal reasons.

In fact, the Daily Telegraph has reported that French met with officials from both Parramatta Eels – where he made his name in the NRL – and Canterbury Bulldogs but a move failed to materialise and the Australian livewire returned to Wigan to honour the last year of his contract.

Since then, however, there has been constant rumblings of deals here, there and everywhere with a move to Leigh Centurions mooted, a deal signed at Wigan and then of course the idea that the Newcastle Knights have made him theirs for 2023 onwards.

French himself admitted a number of weeks ago on Sky Sports that a major deal was ‘very close’ with Wigan head coach Matt Peet wanting to keep the Australian at the club and why wouldn’t he?

The 26-year-old recently broke the record for the number of tries scored in a Super League game with seven against Hull FC whilst his partnership with fellow Australian flyer Jai Field has left rival defences clutching at thin air.

In fact, Field, French and winger Liam Marshall have been responsible for over 60 tries scored by Wigan in 2022 it was revealed by Sky Sports in the Warriors’ big win over rivals Warrington Wolves.

It would be a huge loss to Wigan and Super League if French does end up exiting the club, but what a memory he would leave.
