The twists and turns of Bevan French’s Wigan Warriors future

The future of Bevan French has been one of the most talked about points in Super League this season.

The Australian livewire only signed a one-year deal in 2021 for 2022 and had previously been linked with a move to Super League rivals Hull FC – though that seemed to fall flat with both Brett Hodgson and Matt Peet denying any such move.

Since then, French has been linked with a new deal at the DW Stadium as well as a move back home to the NRL where there will be no shortage of suitors following such an incredible time in the English game, having lit up the Super League like few stars have done in the past.

A record-breaking Friday night for French – in which he scored seven tries to beat Lesley Vainikolo’s previous record of six against the Black and Whites two decades ago – ended with questions on the fullback’s future.

And, French said after the game: “I want to try and sort next year out in the very near future.

“I’ve taken a backstep and allowed my manager to take control of the reins, so I’m sure he’ll do what’s best for me and we’ll take it from there.”

Wigan head coach Matt Peet was asked about French’s future this morning after his record-breaking exploits and Peet echoed the views of French himself.

“I’ll reiterate what Bevan said, I imagine it will be the next couple of weeks, but there’s no hard-and-fast line on it,” Peet told Wigan Today.

“Both parties are understanding of one and other and want to get things done quickly.”

Meanwhile, the Warriors are in pole position for a top two finish after that incredible 60-0 win over Hull on Friday, with both Catalans Dragons and Huddersfield Giants falling short in respective losses to Salford Red Devils and St Helens.
