The top 5 current Super League wingers

In the last article I named my top five fullbacks in Super League. Now, I will rank the five best wingers based on recent performances.

5. Krisnan Inu

Since signing for Salford ahead of the 2019 season, Inu has been everything they were missing. He has been a consistent goalkicker for the Reds, topping the 2020 goalkicking table with an accuracy of 91.4%, whilst Inu’s aerial prowess has seen him claim and prevent tries on multiple occasions. He has some strong competition on the wing for Salford, but after extending his contract for 2021 following a superb season in which he made the 2020 Dream Team, he seems to be a part of Richard Marshall’s plans.

4. Regan Grace

Grace has been a regular feature for Saints ever since his first-team debut in 2017, and has managed 34 tries in his last two seasons. Grace’s lightening speed and agility have made him unpredictable and, at times, unstoppable. The Welsh international has consistently been one of the best wingers in the competition which is even more impressive considering that he is only just reaching what should be his prime years.

3. Tom Johnstone

Despite only being 25, Tom Johnstone has been impressing in Super league since 2015. The Wakefield winger has the ability to score tries from almost any angle, a talent which has resulted in some impressive finishes. After a fantastic 2018, scoring 24 tries, Johnstone suffered a long-term injury the following year. However, he had a promising 2020 season and will hope to maintain fitness and show himself to be deserving of a spot on the wing for England at the World Cup.

2. Ash Handley

Being a member of the Dream Team in 2019 and 2020, as well as being the top try-scorer in 2020, Handley had to make this list. He is a determined carrier of the ball and looks to get Leeds on the front foot with his kick returns. His direct approach to taking the ball to the line resulted in him making more metres than any other player last season. After scoring a brace in last year’s Challenge Cup Final, Handley will do well to eclipse his 2020 achievements.

1. Tommy Makinson

Makinson’s season was impacted by injuries and suspension, but when he was on the pitch, he showed everyone why he is the best winger in the league. Having made the Dream Team in 2018 and 2019, as well as being the top try-scorer in the latter year of the two, Makinson is no stranger to personal achievements. He is one of the most well-rounded wingers to have graced Super League , and isn’t showing any sign of fading, as he will look to help guide Saints to a third successive Grand Final victory.
