The top 5 current Super League second-rowers

Next up in our list of the “top 5” series is the second-row position.

5. Ben Currie

The Warrington forward has been a pivotal cog in the Wolves’ wheel in recent seasons, building a mean left-edge partnership with centre Toby King. Despite two anterior cruciate ligament injuries, Currie is now fighting fit and raring to go to fill an England spot at the World Cup at the end of the season. And, he’s still just 26 years of age which sends out a frightening message to the rest of Super League.

4. Manu Ma’u

Although his first year in Super League wasn’t quite as exciting as some fans may have hoped, Ma’u certainly showed his quality. The powerful back-rower had some highly promising moments, and has given Hull FC fans enough to get them enthusiastic about his future at the club. He has shown his quality in the NRL, and has a lot to offer in 2021.

3. James Bentley

Bentley enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2020, and became a huge part of the St Helens side. His defence was relentless in each appearance he made for Saints, and, although not as big as most back-rowers, he is more than willing to throw himself into every carry and tackle, and is one of the toughest players in the competition. He has been handed the ‘12’ shirt for the club as reward for his efforts.

2. Kelepi Tanginoa

Tanginoa has been an excellent addition to Wakefield’s squad, and will be a key part of their push to place higher in the table than many pundits have predicted for them. He made the 2020 Dream Team in impressive fashion, despite Wakefield finishing 10th, whilst his powerful runs saw him cross six times for Wakefield. Tanginoa has become one of the most feared forwards in the competition.

1. Liam Farrell

2020 was another excellent year for Farrell as he earned his second consecutive appearance in the Dream Team. Him and Jackson Hastings fast became one of the most prolific partnerships on a left-sided edge in the league as Wigan went on an impressive run of wins. His consistency and natural ability were apparent throughout the season as the 30-year-old scored six tries and made 676 tackles in Super League alone.
