The top 5 current Super League full-backs

This article is part of a series that will rank the five best current Super League players in each position. This piece will look over the best five full-backs in Super League, based off their performances in 2020.

5. Richie Myler

After an injury to Jack Walker early on in 2020, Richie Myler found himself having to adapt to yet another new role. Despite signing for Leeds as a half-back, Myler looked like a natural full-back throughout last season. The 30-year-old seemed to get better as the season progressed, and earned himself the Lance Todd Trophy in a closely fought Challenge Cup final against Salford. His performances earned him a contract extension with the Rhinos, leaving Richard Agar with a real headache at full-back for 2021.

4. Sam Tomkins

In 2020, Tomkins’ skills showed no sign of fading. His intelligent playing style was integral to the Catalans attack as he led them to a play-off semi-final. Tomkins put on some wonderful displays for the Dragons, setting up 11 tries and managing 52 tackle busts during the year. If Steve McNamara’s side are to upset the odds and go one step further this year, then an in-form Tomkins will be essential.

3. Niall Evalds

Evalds was a Salford player in 2020, but will play for Castleford in 2021 after a controversial exit from his boyhood club. He was a consistent try scorer for the Red Devils, scoring nine Super League tries in 2020 despite playing just 10 games. His defensive prowess is not to be underestimated either, as he has proven himself to be just as competent at stopping tries as he is scoring them.

2. Lachlan Coote

The Saints fullback could very easily have topped this list. Coote is one of the most well-rounded fullbacks to have played in Super League. With a fantastic kicking game, excellent positioning and a wonderful support player, Coote is one of the best players in the league. And, possessing a goalkicking accuracy of 87% in 2020, as well as 10 tries and 14 assists, he was in the running for last year’s Man of Steel.

1. Bevan French

Bevan French was arguably the best player in the league last year. The lightening quick fullback scored 12 Super League tries in 2020 for Wigan, many of which were contenders for Try of the Season. French also made 27 clean breaks, making for exciting viewing every time he touches the ball. After expressing his commitment to the Warriors for 2021, it will be interesting to see if he can help his side avenge last year’s Grand Final defeat.
