The Challenge Cup is the oldest most prestigious tournament in rugby league being won back in 1897 for the very first time by Batley against St Helens.

In 2023, the tournament returns to its spiritual home: Wembley. This comes after the game moved to Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium in 2022 as Wigan Warriors won a record 20th Challenge Cup Final.

But who will dethrone Matty Peet’s team in 2023 or will they retain the trophy and winning a 21st Challenge Cup?

Here’s the three best placed teams to win the cup in 2023?

St Helens

This is an obvious pick but the reigning Super League have to be favourites for all three trophies in 2023. They know how to win big games and ended their cup final hoodoo in 2021 after 13 years without a Wembley win. They will want to right the wrongs or 2022 too and this would be the perfect way for Paul Wellens to begin his tenure as coach.

Salford Red Devils

Salford finished the season in brilliant form and looked capable of beating anyone with their strongest side on the field which is something they didn’t have against St Helens in the Super League semi-finals. They also have match winners like Brodie Croft in their side.

Leeds Rhinos

Like Salford, Leeds finished the season in brilliant form and are now well adjusted to knockout rugby playing it pretty much every week under Rohan Smith. They have a strong defence and many of the squad have experience of winning the cup after 2020. Thus they could go on to repeat this success in 2023.
