The Super League clubs who could sign playmaker following shock immediate exit

Wakefield Trinity star Lee Gaskell has left the club as confirmed by the club on social media.

Gaskell joined the club from Huddersfield Giants at the end of 2021 as part of Ian Watson’s rebuild at Huddersfield.

He was a major signing for Wakefield and in his second season at the club was handed the number six shirt having worn the number 17 shirt in 2022.

Gaskell started his career at St Helens playing in the 2011 Grand Final. He went on to play Bradford Bulls and Huddersfield.

Michael Carter said: “Lee never really got the sustained run at his favoured number 6 position whilst at the Club, and both parties felt it would be best for Lee to pursue other opportunities. I would like to thank Lee for his service to Wakefield Trinity and wish him all the best in the future.”

The club have mutually agreed to release him from his contract effective today.

This comes after a number of signings at the club.

Where Gaskell will end up next remains unclear.

But here’s the clubs who could move for the now free agent:

Hull KR
Hull KR are doing it incredibly tough at the minute in terms of injuries. The Robins have lost Jordan Abdull for three months, Lachlan Coote is still recovering from a head knock whilst Sam Wood could have played his last game for the club. Thus bringing in Gaskell would be a smart move given he would provide vital cover in key positions. Willie Peters has been open about wanting signings to alleviate the pressure on his injury hit squad.

Leeds Rhinos
Leeds are also doing it tough with injuries with halfback Aidan Sezer out for six weeks. Thus, bringing in his former Huddersfield teammate Gaskell would ease the pressure on this key area in the Rhinos side. They have cap space after Kruise Leeming’s exit.

Castleford Tigers
Perhaps a little less likely given they have just signed Warrington Wolves’ Riley Dean on a season long loan. However, with Niall Evalds out long term and the club being open about wanting new faces, Gaskell could be a smart signing.

Championship clubs
He would also be a great signing for any Championship club gunning for Super League promotion. Perhaps a return to Odsal would help replace Jack Walker and get the Bulls back to Super League.
