The story behind the bizarre bull incident in Super League

Yesterday we saw a bizarre moment in Super League.

As bulls were paraded around the pitch at Catalans Dragons, one got loose dragging its handler onto the pitch and forcing the players to dart off the field during their warm up.

The incident preceded Catalans’ 24-12 win over St Helens.

But why were the Bulls there?

Well Catalans owner Bernard Guasch is Head of the Catalans Cattle Breeders Association and he wanted to honour local breeding.

The following statement explained the decision:

“The club will honour local breeding during this meeting in partnership with Guasch Viandes and Transhumancia. The “Gascon of the Pyrenees” will come down from her mountains in Occitania on Friday to be present with you on this match.

“This hardy cow is present throughout the Occitanie region, taking up summer quarters on the Pyrenean summer pastures from the beginning of June until the end of October. It remains easily identifiable by its beautiful silvery gray dress and its forward arched horns. Thanks to a diet mainly based on grass, its meat is highly appreciated for its inimitable flavor and tenderness.

“You can taste it on the day of the match with a special menu in the reception areas of the stadium and at the various catering outlets in the fan zones.

“Three prize-winning bulls at the last Paris Agricultural Show as well as two cows of the same Gascon breed will be visible on the Guasch Laborde Fan Zone and will even perform a lap of honour on the lawn during the warm-up.”

So it was a prize winning bull that escaped. Well he won’t have won any prizes for his actions yesterday except for bizarre moment of the year.
