The “shambolic scenes” that ruined an NRL post match press conference

By now, we all know how press conferences work in rugby league.

At the front of the room sits the coach speaking about the result whilst an audience of journalists sit opposite them conjuring up questions which could lead to the next big story or simply a throw away comment from the big boss at the front.

However, this was not the case after Manly vs Parramatta in the NRL yesterday. A terrific contest which went the way of the Eels 36-20 with Maika Sivo scoring twice as the Eels all but ended Manly’s season which at the start of the year promised so much with star player Tom Trbojevic set to lead them to glory though that has not been the case.

The Sea Eagles presently sit 10th in the ladder four points adrift of the play-offs with Parramatta conversely in fifth eight points ahead of Manly.

A terrible season then for Manly, but it isn’t as bad as what happened in the press conference afterwards which was truly bizarre and described as “shambolic” by one.

It would end in no Parramatta players speaking to the press at all, Daly Cherry-Evans joining them and Brad Arthur moving his press conference outside.

Why? Because a positive rapid antigen test for Covid-19 was left in the press conference room.

AAP journalist Scott Bailey revealed all on twitter describing it as “shambolic scenes”.

He said: “Absolute shambolic scenes at Brookvale. Positive RAT cartridge sitting in the designated press conference room. None of the journalists behind it. DCE opted out of presser while Brad Arthur moved his outside and no Eels players spoke as a result.”

It still remains to be seen by the test was left there and who it belonged to. Hopefully no one else got infected in order to ensure both Parramatta and Manly face uninterrupted ends to the season and so all can continue to go about their business in good health.
