The race for George Williams appears to have been won

Warrington appear to have won the race for George Williams, Wigan Today has revealed.

That means that Wigan are set to miss out on their former academy graduate as the Wolves prepare to sign Williams on a marquee player deal, with the deal expected to be confirmed as early as this week.

Williams had spent a year-and-a-half at Canberra following a big-money move from Wigan ahead of the 2020 season, but claims of homesickness plagued the last few months of his time with the Raiders.

The the Green Machine’s CEO Don Furner then decided to release Williams immediately instead of waiting until the end of the season.

Wigan, Warrington and Leeds were said to be in for the halfback, but it appears that the big-spending Wolves are set to get their man, which would hand current Wire halfback Gareth Widdop the opportunity to sign for the Raiders as has been rumoured.
