“The offer from Hull KR was a lot greater than what we could have offered” – why one Super League boss was resigned to losing star

St Helens head coach has stressed that he and the club wanted Lachlan Coote to stay at Saints, but just couldn’t match the offer from Hull KR.

Coote will be moving to the Hull College Craven Park at the end of 2021 to replace Rovers’ Adam Quinlan, but the Australian fullback has been a key player for Saints since he arrived.

And, Woolf was keen to stress the impact that Coote has had on St Helens since arriving.

“Lachlan Coote has been a really big part of this team in the past three years and it’s no coincidence since his arrival that the club has been successful.

“It’s because of the leadership he brings and he’s being outstanding in the past 18 months I’ve coached him.

“We would have liked Lachlan to stay for longer, but at the end of the day he’s got to look after his family and the offer from Hull KR was a lot greater than what we could have offered.”

Coote has made over 50 appearances for Saints, scoring over 550 points in that time.
