The longest unbeaten streak in rugby league ends

Rugby league is one of the most physical and competitive sports which can make unbeaten runs incredibly hard to string together.

Even the best teams in rugby league lose which makes runs of even five wins in a row very impressive, however one team sailed past 40 wins in a row late last year but they’ve had their record cut short at 44 this weekend.

Catalans Dragons Under 19s team, or St Esteve Catalan, had continued their impressive run into the 2023 season with their last loss all the way back in 2019, as reported here.

That unbeaten run has kicked off over three years going back to November 30th in 2019 when they beat Avignon 56-16.

For context the longest unbeaten run in Super League saw Bradford Bulls string together 21 unbeaten games across the 1996 and 1997 seasons.

Catalans’ youngsters compete in the Elite One U19s championship in France, having pulled out of the Super League academy league four years ago due to travel costs.

It all came to an end this week though as they failed to manage their 45th win in a row when they lost to Toulouse Olmpique’s youngster by a score of 24-16.

That saw Toulouse head into the quarter-finals of the French Cup and put an end to one of the most impressive winning runs in rugby league’s history, but also sporting history in general.
