The latest on Salford Red Devils’ stadium switch

The Red Devils are gearing up to move out of the AJ Bell Stadium in a switch with Salford City FC.

The 12,000 capacity ground where Salford reside is currently jointly owned by Salford council and property and land giant Peel.

But, for the past few months, the Red Devils have been in negotiations to move, with Sale Sharks expected to become sole owners of the AJ Bell.

Things seemed to be going quiet over the November and December period, but now, the Manchester World has reported that the Rugby Football League has given the green light for Salford to move to the Peninsula Stadium – otherwise known as Moor Lane, the home of Salford City.

Having said that, Moor Lane would still need new floodlights and a new gantry to enable broadcasting for Super League games.

Front row seats at the ground may also have to be taken out in order to fit in higher advertising hoardings, which would reduce the capacity below what is required for Super League games.

Without any training facilities, too, there are a number of questions that still need answering if the move is to go ahead.

Red Devils’ executive chairman Paul King has said all along that he would consult fans after Christmas about their preferred option: Moor Lane, the Athletics Arena at the Etihad Campus, Gigg Lane in Bury and the University of Bolton Stadium at Middlebrook in Horwich have been touted as possible destinations, but King is determined to avoid anything more serious, too.

“To fold this club would break my heart,” King previously said. “But if we can only sell 1,000 season tickets, if we can’t raise the funds to go to Moor Lane, then what’s our other option?”

It’s murky time for the club, but for the sake of the vociferous Salford supporters and all those behind the scenes trying their utmost to make it work, let’s hope a solution is found.
