The five best metre makers currently in Super League

One of the most important things you can do in rugby league is make metres.

This can allow sides to dominate a game and can lead to success. In fact it is this that has underpinned St Helens’ recent success.

But who are the five best metre makers currently in Super League?

5. Tom Davies – Catalans Dragons
Since arriving at Catalans Dragons, Tom Davies has been exceptional both at scoring tries but making metres. In a side where the focus has always been on the middles, Davies always makes metres too at the starts of sets. He made 2954 metres in 2022.

4. Ken Sio – Salford Red Devils
The focus with Ken Sio has always been try scoring. The top scorer in 2021 and in 2022 he was again up for that award as he made the Dream Team again. However, he is also brilliant at making metres and is a threat on a kick return. He made 2990 metres in 2022.

3. Derrell Olpherts – Leeds Rhinos
Rohan Smith loves a metre making winger, they are essential to the style of play the Rhinos have adopted under Smith. This makes Derrell Olpherts a great signing after he made 3201 metres in 2022 which was the third most in Super League.

2. Jai Field – Wigan Warriors
Jai Field made 3233 metres in 2022. But unlike the others who make metres with their power and strength whilst Field’s metres are more down to his elusiveness and evasion which is great to watch.

1. Ash Handley – Leeds Rhinos
No player in Super League made as many metres as Ash Handley in 2022. He made a huge 3646 metres with a brilliant average gain of 8.34 metres per carry. He is always a danger when returning a kick.
