The five best halfback pairings currently in Super League

At the heart of every good team is a top notch halfback partnership like the Danny McGuire and Rob Burrow combo of the past.

But which teams going into 2023 have the best halfback pairings?

Here’s our top five:

5. Jake Trueman and Jake Clifford – Hull FC
They may not have played together yet but these two have huge potential going into the new season. Trueman is a superb running threat with a creative spark and Jake Clifford has all the tools to give him the platform he needs to shine.

4. Blake Austin and Aidan Sezer – Leeds Rhinos
A halfback pairing that nearly too Canberra Raiders all the way to Grand Final glory in 2016, they reunited in 2022 and when fit had Leeds headed to the Grand Final. Again a pairing with ideal balance, Rohan Smith will bring the best out of them.

3. Cade Cust and Harry Smith – Wigan Warriors
Cade Cust was one of the underappreciated signings of last year whilst Harry Smith had a superb year and helped deliver the Challenge Cup trophy to Wigan at the Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium. The two created the platform Jai Field and Bevan French need to shine. They were vital in the Warriors finishing second.

2. Brodie Croft and Marc Sneyd – Salford Red Devils
Brodie Croft is now Super League’s reigning Man of Steel after he tore teams apart but he dovetails masterfully with Sneyd who kicks masterfully and organises the dangerous Red Devils attack.

1. Jonny Lomax and Lewis Dodd – St Helens
At the start of last year, Lewis Dodd was one of the best players in the league and devastating teams. Fit again for 2023, he and Super League’s best player over the last five years could have Saints strolling to a fifth consecutive title.
