The five best defences in Super League history

In football they say attackers win you games and defenders win you titles.

That is true in Super League but which teams have boasted the best defences in Super League history.

Here are the five best defences in Super League history.

Leeds Rhinos – 2008
Leeds may have only finished second in 2008, but they only conceded 413 points in 27 rounds. They even went 236 minutes without conceding a try. That was even over the Easter period which makes it even more impressive.

Warrington Wolves – 2011
When reflecting on this Warrington team people focus on the Wolves’ free flowing attack under Tony Smith. However, they only conceded 401 points in 27 games.

St Helens – 2018 & 2019
St Helens became the first team since the 1990s to concede less than 400 points. They did so in 29 games as well which is even more impressive. They only conceded 395 that season having only conceded 408 points in 2018 in 30 games.

Wigan Warriors – 1996
In 1996 Wigan missed out on the league by one point. However, they only conceded 325 points which was 120 points less than Champions St Helens.

Wigan Warriors – 1998
Perhaps the best defence in Super League history. They only conceded 222 points. Yes this was in a 22 game season meaning they only conceded 10.1 points per game which is truly remarkable. They also only lost two games all season both against second place against Leeds Rhinos.
