Warrington Wolves have eight players entering the final year of their respective deals at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Sam Burgess’ side went so close to silverware in the head coach’s first season at the club. The Wolves lost out in the final of the Challenge Cup, with Wigan Warriors doing enough to edge out the primrose and blue at Wembley Stadium.
They then fell short of a spot in the Super League Grand Final as Hull KR just edged them out in the play-off semi-finals at Craven Park. On many metrics, it was a successful season for Warrington but Burgess will want trophies and he’ll be doing all he can to get over the line in 2025.
He hasn’t made too many changes to his playing group, with Oli Leyland, Dan Russell and Alfie Johnson the only additions made over the off-season, while Matty Nicholson and Josh Drinkwater are among the more high profile departures. He’ll be feeling confident at the talent he has at his disposal for the upcoming season, though, and it won’t be long until thoughts turn to retentions.
With clubs set to be able to talk to players from December 1, according to reports, contracts look set to be looked at earlier than in previous years and Warrington have eight men who could well be available from the start of next month.
As such, it seems Warrington Wolves will have to make decisions on those players quickly if they are to avoid losing them to other clubs.
Paul Vaughan is one of the most notable players potentially set to be available in 2025 with the contract extension he signed in April 2023 set to expire in 12 months. He has been linked with a move back to the NRL in recent days and while those claims have been quashed Down Under, the club will still be mulling over the 33-year-old and his future at the club.
Toby King is entering a testimonial year, but it could also be his last as a Warrington player unless something gets sorted. Stefan Ratchford is another Wire stalwart with just one year left to go, but given he turns 37 next year, the club will likely let him make his own call before speaking to him about the possibility of an extension.
Rodrick Tai was one of the surprise packages of last season, with the 25-year-old making a spot in the Wire side his own after joining the club from PNG Hunters. Based on his first year with the club, he’ll be one Burgess and the Warrington decision makers will be looking at closely.
Connor Wrench suffered the second ACL injury of his career in July, but he’s playing for his future at the Wolves when he returns to action, while the club will be running the rule over Zane Musgrove and Jordan Crowther, too.
Sam Powell shared the hooker spot well with Danny Walker last season, but the two-year deal he signed this time last year has just 12 more months left to run. He’ll be keen to impress and secure his place in Burgess’ plans for 2026 and beyond then.
