The 23 players who remain free agents after their Super League release and their next moves

Warrington Wolves Josh Drinkwater

Super League clubs have drawn a line under the 2024 season and are busy preparing themselves for the start of the 2025 campaign. For some outfits pre-season is already underway, while others will be returning in the coming days and weeks to get themselves ready for the round one in February.

There are still a host of players without contracts for the upcoming season, though, having had their releases confirmed by Super League clubs. Here, we take a look what might be next for the players who have left top flight outfits after the 2024 season but remain free agents.

Luis Johnson

Johnson left Castleford Tigers at the end of the season and he now has the difficult task of trying to find a new club while recovering from a serious knee injury. The 25-year-old spent just one season as a permanent Castleford player, having had spells with Hull KR and Warrington Wolves before then. He’ll be confident of being able to prove himself and earn a deal when he is fit and able to, though.

Manu Ma’u

The back-rower brought an end to his time at Catalans Dragons at the end of the season and in truth, given he turned 36 in August, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him hang up his boots.

Matt Ikuvalu

The former Sydney Roosters man spent two seasons with the Dragons and scored 12 tries in 37 appearances. According to Rugby League Live he was offered to Super League clubs in 2025 but his next step remains to be seen.

Carlos Tuimavave

The centre left Hull FC after spending nine years at the club and he will be regarded as one of the club’s next overseas signings. It is understood that Tuimavave had Super League interest, but in order to stay local to East Yorkshire, he looks set to take up a deal in the Championship, with Hull Live suggesting Featherstone Rovers are in the frame.

Mitieli Vulikijapani

The Fijian spent four years at Hull but made just one appearance in his final two seasons with the Black and Whites before his release. He made an appearance for rugby union outfit Northampton Saints on Friday, but isn’t known to have signed a deal with the club.

Charlie Severs

The back-rower was highly thought of at Hull but injuries got the best of him and he could well be forced to turn his back on the professional game.

Matt Parcell

The former Hull KR hooker was due to make the move back to Australia at the end of the season after eight years in Super League. It seems unlikely that he’ll take up another professional deal.

Reiss Butterworth

According to Hull Live, the hooker will be joining Sheffield Eagles for 2025 after his release by the Robins.

David Fusitu’a

Injuries got the best of Fusitu’a’s three-year spell at Leeds Rhinos and while there can be no denying his ability when he’s fit and firing, it remains to be seen what his next move will be.

Paul Momirovski

Serious About RL’s sister site, the Yorkshire Evening Post reports that Momirovski is considering a coaching position with Sydney Roosters following his premature Leeds Rhinos exit.

Mickael Goudemand

Goudemand was granted a release by Leeds after just one season at Headingley in order to pursue other playing opportunities. Where he will end up, though, remains to be seen.

Justin Sangare

Rugby League Live revealed last month that Sangare has agreed a deal to join Salford Red Devils, with the prop’s release from Leeds being confirmed a couple of weeks ago.

Kieran Hudson

According to Rugby League Live, Hudson will make a return to Castleford Tigers for 2025 after spending just one season with Leeds Rhinos.

Luis Roberts

The winger was released by Leeds without the offer of a new deal at the end of the season and as it stands he has not found a new club. Reports back in May suggested Roberts had Super League suitors, but where he ends up remains to be seen.

Ricky Leutele

Sky Sports have reported that Leutele could be on his way back to Huddersfield Giants after leaving Leigh Leopards and that’s something that Luke Robinson has failed to rule out. A deal is yet to be announced, though, and as it stands he remains without a club.

Tom Nisbet

The 25-year-old has left Leigh and according to Rugby League Live, he has taken up the opportunity to play Down Under with Queensland Cup outfit Townsville Blackhawks.

Jacob Gannon

Gannon spent much of last season on loan from Leigh at York Knights, but he is now on the lookout for a new club after his release.

Jacob Jones

It has been reported that the former Leigh man has penned a deal to join Championship outfit Doncaster for 2025.

Adam Sidlow

A move to Swinton Lions appears to be on the cards for Sidlow, who has been released by Salford Red Devils. That’s according to Rugby League Live, at least, who claim the 37-year-old is expected to go around at least once more.

Sam Royle

St Helens confirmed the release of Sam Royle at the end of the season after making 28 appearances for the club. At the time of writing, though, he is yet to find to find a new club.

Waqa Blake

Rugby League Live have reported that Bradford Bulls have taken a look at the former St Helens man, who represented Fiji in the Pacific Championships last month.

Josh Drinkwater

Oldham have promised two or three more high profile recruits and it seems Drinkwater could be one following his release by Warrington Wolves, according to Rugby League Live that is.

Ryan Hampshire

Hampshire has left Wigan Warriors and as of yet he hasn’t found a new club. The 29-year-old will be keen to line up a Super League move before too long, though, in order to avoid missing too much pre-season action.
