Wigan Warriors Harry Smith Super League

Round 25 of Super League saw twelve players reach career milestones, including two England stars for Wigan Warriors and St Helens respectively.

It was a significant round in terms of how it has left the Super League ladder looking with Wigan Warriors returning to the summit of the competition after beating Hull KR 24-20 in one of the games of the season.

That was a match that saw four players hit landmark milestones for their careers, although the only one able to celebrate and remember the occasion fondly was Wigan’s Harry Smith.

He made his 150th career appearance, 127 of which have come in Cherry and White. Smith was returning from a three-game ban and the England half put in a strong performance as his side came out on top.

Three men who will have had far quieter celebrations for their milestone moments given the score were Kelepi Tanginoa (150th career appearance), Dean Hadley (100th Hull KR appearance) and Jai Whitbread (100th career appearance) For Whitbread, it was somewhat of a nightmare 100th career appearance with his second-half sin bin proving costly.

Friday night also saw a trio of Leigh players hit landmark milestones and whilst Josh Charnley reached one, he’s agonisingly close to an even more significant record.

Charnley made his 300th Super League appearance, a figure that is incredible when you consider he spent two seasons in rugby union and is still only 33. He celebrated with a 34-12 win in which he scored a try, leaving him one shy of Danny McGuire for second all-time in Super League.

His teammates Tom Amone and Owen Trout both made their 100th career appearance and Amone marked his century with a two-try performance.

Onto Saturday and one of the biggest milestones of the round in Ben Currie who made his 300th career appearance and 250th Super League appearance. The Wire veteran earned Man of the Match as he put in a brilliant 74-minute stint to help his side to a 16-2 win.

That win came over St Helens who were boosted by the return of Jack Welsby who came back from injury to play just over 40 minutes in his 150th career appearance, 139 of which have come from for Saints.

Huddersfield beat London on Sunday to end the round and two of their players celebrated milestone moments. Oliver Russell, who will depart for Wakefield at the end of the season, made his 100th Giants’ appearance whilst Oliver Wilson made his 100th career appearance.

For the Broncos, it was Rhys Kennedy celebrating a milestone as he made his 100th career appearance, 51 of which have come representing Super League clubs.
