St Helens are going through a torrid season in terms of injuries and they’re currently fighting to hold onto their spot in the playoffs. They will undergo a major change for 2025 with signings confirmed and potentially 12 players set to leave.
Among the dozen that could leave The Totally Wicked Stadium are some of the club’s brightest stars, however, the status of their head coach has been clarified in recent weeks.
Paul Wellens was out of contract at the end of the 2024 season and as the losses racked up for the Red Vee, more and more questions were asked about the future of their head coach.
That was clarified last week with a one-year extension confirmed following consecutive wins against Hull FC and Salford Red Devils. Despite Wellens’ future being confirmed, the fate of 10 players is still unconfirmed with two certain to leave.
We’ve assessed the 12 players that St Helens are currently set to lose.
All the players that St Helens could lose for 2025
Of the 12 players that St Helens could lose for 2025, two are confirmed and they are Lewis Dodd and Tommy Makinson who have signed deals elsewhere for the upcoming season.
Dodd will be the latest English talent to head down under after signing a deal with South Sydney Rabbitohs whilst Makinson will be the latest English talent to head to the South of France after penning a deal at Catalans.
Both men are major losses, perhaps the two biggest losses at the club, although Saints have confirmed that Tristain Sailor has signed for 2025 in place of Dodd.
Two players that are off-contract but do have one-year extension options are youngster Will Roberts and veteran forward Sione Mata’utia who has been hampered by injury for long periods in 2024.
That leaves a further eight who are off contract and with no extension option with the biggest name of those being Konrad Hurrell who has been out with a neck injury in recent weeks. His future is uncertain, something Paul Wellens has commented upon with the centre seemingly done for the season.
His replacement this year has been Waqa Blake but the Fijian international only arrived on a one-year deal so could leave for 2025, as could another outside back in Jon Bennison who has found gametime hard to come by.
The likes of Ben Davies, Sam Royle and Jake Burns have all played periodically and have been called upon due to recent injury issues but they’re all set to leave as it stands.
The remaining two are 20-year-old duo Ben Lane and McKenzie Buckley but neither have taken to the field for the club this season.
