‘That’s why he’s our skipper’ – Hull FC man outlines Aidan Sezer impact and makes Super League claim

Aidan Sezer is the in-form half-back of Super League right now following his magnificent start to life at Hull FC. That’s the belief of Herman Ese’ese, who is in red hot form himself with tries coming in his last three games in black and white.

His latest effort came in the win over Wakefield Trinity on Friday night, crashing over in the first half to score the first try of the night for John Cartwright’s side. Hull went on to secure the win with two second half tries, from Ed Chamberlain and Lewis Martin, and Sezer claimed the assist on both.

The scrum-half has been Hull’s top performer over the first few weeks of the campaign, dragging his teammates along, raising standards and producing the good when the Black and Whites need it most. In five Super League games he has produced seven assists and while round five’s points haven’t been revealed just yet, he currently sits on top of the Man of Steel leaderboard.

On top of that, the Australian produced arguably his best performance of the season so far in the Challenge Cup as Hull saw off Wigan Warriors at the Brick Community Stadium. Indeed, Sezer has already established himself as the talisman in west Hull and Ese’ese has opened up on the influence the captain has.

“He’s a freak, Aidan Sezer,” Ese’ese said after the club’s latest win at Wakefield. “That’s why he’s our skipper.

“He’s experienced, he’s a top player and he’s played so many NRL games and he’s been there and done that. He’s probably the in-form half in the comp right now.

“We’ve got players who know what a winning culture is and have had successful careers and they bring that to the team. You have young fellas that are coming up and learning off them and seeing their growth, it’s just a real good bond within the team.”

As mentioned above, Ese’ese is another who is thriving under the guidance of Cartwright right now, with the prop having a huge say on Hull’s fortunes. The forward impressed in his first season with the club, but he’s building on that this season and it’s fair to say he has probably been the outstanding middle in the competition so far.

“I’m really enjoying it,” Ese’ese added. “Just the way we’ve started the season and coming off the back of a really good win against the best team last week and a gutsy win tonight.

“That comes down to a really good culture within the team. We’re a tight knight group and when you have that it makes it enjoyable.”

Asked if he felt he was playing his best rugby, the Hull FC man added: “To be honest, that’s not for me to judge. I just go out there week in, week out, take it one game at a time and try and put my best foot forward every game. I’m just trying to do my job here for this club and do the best that I can.

“We’ve brought some good, experienced players within the group, compared to last year, having big bodies in the forward pack helps a lot. Overall it’s a team effort and it’s 17 blokes that go out there and play really hard.”
