“That is worrying” – Phil Clarke slams this aspect of Wigan’s performance

As the Sky Sports pundits carried out a post-mortem on Wigan Warriors’ shock 40-18 defeat to 12 man Leeds Rhinos last night, Phil Clarke picked out a worrying sign.

He highlighted Leeds’ sixth try which came from Cameron Smith who used a touch of footwork to carve open the Wigan defence with ease.

Clarke was less than impressed:

“This a worrying one for Wigan here. It is the last tackle so maybe they relax and a bit of footwork from Smith and he is over underneath the posts.”

Stevie Ward echoed those sentiments, saying:

“That is poor defence, Matty Peet won’t be happy with that as it dropped away.”

Meanwhile, Clarke attempted to explain the defeat overall:

“Two of them were interception tries, those are explained but the rest, I think Leeds moved the ball more.

“In the first half they couldn’t get a quick play the ball but give them some possession which hadn’t been even and ball movement was key. Any team, even the best defensive teams, struggle when there is ball movement at pace and Leeds did that.”

Wigan will have a chance to right the wrongs of last night next week in the Challenge Cup as they take on Leeds Rhinos again this time at Headingley.
