Surprise candidate in line for England captaincy

Wigan Warriors head coach Shaun Wane speaks to the press after his sides 40-10 win against Salford Red Devils during the Betfred Super League Round 1 Salford Red Devils versus Wigan Warriors 02/02/2018 at the AJ Bell Stadium

John Bateman could be set for the England captaincy against France in the two nations’ international friendly at the weekend.

That’s according to the Canberra Times which claims that Bateman is next in line to lead out England, with Sam Tomkins currently out with injury.

Tomkins was chosen ahead of Bateman to captain England in the mid-season clash against the Combined Nations All Stars but looks set to be handed the reins by former head coach Shaun Wane.

“He’s not said anything yet,” said Bateman.

“He likes to keep his cards close to his chest. As long as I’m playing, I’m not too fussed.

“If he said it, though, 100 per cent I’d be buzzing. You dream about it but you don’t think it’s going to come true – it’d be alright for a lad from Bradford, wouldn’t it?”

England’s fixture against France in the south of France will be broadcast live on the BBC.
