Super League’s five unexpected stars of 2021

2021 has been a season of surprises so far. The likes of Hull KR and Catalans have defied the odds and seem headed for success this year despite the fact many of the so-called experts had them tipped to struggle.

Their success has unsurprisingly led to the shining of some unexpected stars in Super League this term. Yes, the usual suspects have impressed but it’s been nice to talk about some new names this year.

So, here’s our five unexpected stars of 2021.

Jake Mamo

I remember when Mamo first came to Super League with Huddersfield back in 2017. He impressed and everyone said if he could stay fit, he’d be a sensation. Until recently, he’s never really been given the consistent game time to be the star we all knew he could be. This year he’s been one of the most exciting and dynamic players to watch and is capable of conjuring something from nothing at any given moment. Warrington will miss him when he heads to Cas next year.

Jordan Abdull

Few halfbacks are having as good a season as Jordan Abdull. The Rovers number seven has been at the heart of Hull KR’s impressive campaign. Not only does he organise but he creates. He has a superb pass on him as well as a pin-point kick and he can destroy teams with his potent running game. Right up there in the Man of Steel rankings and with double figures in terms of assists, he’s always a delight to watch.

Ben Garcia

Garcia has always been a trustworthy player for Catalans, but this year it was important that he became more prominent now that he wears the captain’s armband. Well, he’s more than risen to the challenge. He’s been one of Super League’s best forwards this season and has been essential in Catalans’ journey to the top. If the Dragons stay there, he’ll be at the heart of it once he returns from injury.

Adam Swift

When Swift left St Helens it felt like he had something to prove. He arrived at Hull last year and wasn’t really given a shot on the wing for the Black and Whites. Well, this season that’s not been the case now that he’s established himself as their first-choice winger. He’s towards the top of the try scoring rankings but also nails every aspect of the position in both defence and attack and is always a joy to watch.

Gareth Widdop

This one might surprise you but honestly I think most people bizarrely wrote Gareth Widdop off going into 2021. Despite the fact he’s a former NRL Champion and one of the best sevens in the world, few expected Widdop to come up with the goods this season. Well, he has and is one of the best and most exciting players to watch in the league. He has 10 tries to his name and has turned Warrington into contenders again. They’ll want him fit again as soon as possible.
