Super League team records that you had no idea existed

Super League, in its 25-year existence, has seen some incredible records being set – whether that’s from a team perspective or on an individual basis. But, just which team records stand out?

Most points scored in a season (total)

This outstanding accolade falls to the Leeds Rhinos side of 2005, who scored a remarkable 1152 points with Mark Calderwood registering the most tries with 34.

Most points scored in a season (points per game)

This statistic is perhaps even more impressive than the one above with St Helens notching up a quite brilliant average of 43.18 points per game in the first season of Super League in 1996.

Most tries scored in a season

Leeds again hold the record for the most tries scored in a season with 213. The year was again 2005, ironically the year that the Rhinos were beaten in both the Challenge Cup Final and the Grand Final.

Most goals in a season

You would have been forgiven in thinking that with scoring the most tries in a Super League season, that Leeds would also have the most goals in a season. However, that mantle falls to Bradford, whose 204 goals registered in 2001 is still the record.

Most drop goals scored in a season

11 is the record, with two sides holding first place – Halifax in 1999 and Warrington in 2002.

Fewest points conceded in a season (total)

There’s no surprises here that it is St Helens in 2020, but that was all down to the fact that Saints played just 17 games due to the COVID-19 pandemic. All in all, the Lancashire club leaked just 195 points that season.

Fewest points conceded in a season (points per game)

You have to traipse all the way back to 1998 to find this record as Wigan leaked a mere 222 points in 23 games. That averages out at a remarkable 9.65 points per game!

Most points conceded in a season

Leigh fans have been trying for the good part of 16 years to erase their relegation season of 2005 from memory. With just two wins and one draw all season, the Centurions also leaked a massive 1210 points. Despite Leigh accruing just four points in 2021, their points against was a lot more impressive, with 870.

Longest undefeated and winning streak

Perhaps the most impressive statistic of them all is this one from Bradford. The Bulls were undefeated for 21 games between 24 August 1996 and 22 August 1997.

Longest winless and losing streak

Everyone probably knew which side this was before it was even announced. Halifax endured a distinctly appalling 2003 season in the top-flight. They won just one game all year – and even those two points were taken off them for salary cap breaches. A 27-game losing streak from 7 March 2003 to 21 September 2003 is likely to never be beaten.
