Super League Team of the Week: Wigan Warriors, Leeds Rhinos, Castleford Tigers and Salford Red Devils dominate

Well, that’s another round of Super League fixtures done and dusted as teams head into a busy period of play.

The Super League fixtures are coming thick and fast for teams with another round of games on Sunday and Monday, but this week’s was kicked off with Leeds Rhinos hosting Huddersfield Giants on Wednesday night.

The Rhinos ended up just about overcoming their West Yorkshire rivals in an 18-14 victory – but it wasn’t without controversy as the topic of ‘play-acting’ once more came to the fore.

Move on to Thursday night and there were four games to contend with as Toulouse Olympique went down to French rivals Catalans Dragons in a hard-fought affair before Wakefield Trinity racked up yet another win with a fine performance against Hull KR.

Willie Poching’s men ran out 18-6 winners with winger Lewis Murphy scoring the pick of the bunch whilst Hull FC went down to Salford Red Devils at the AJ Bell Stadium.

That 28-18 loss just about ended FC’s chances of making the top six with two games to go, though Castleford Tigers are very much in the mix after an incredible 19-18 away win over the Warrington Wolves.

Castleford were down 12-0 at half-time before mounting a second-half comeback to keep level with Salford in the race for the play-offs.

On Saturday, St Helens travelled to the Wigan Warriors in what promised to be a rip-roaring affair; and it didn’t disappoint. Wigan, however, were able to overcome Saints 30-10 in a statement to the rest of Super League.

But, just who made it into the Super League Team of the Week?

1. Jai Field – Wigan Warriors

A brilliant performance from Jai Field in the win over Saints guarantees his place in this spot. Field scored a superb try and helped to keep Saints out on a number of occasions.

2. Liam Marshall – Wigan Warriors

How impressive is this man? In a team where Bevan French and Jai Field take all the plaudits, Liam Marshall cannot be left out. The winger scored an incredible try against Saints last night to win the game.

3. Deon Cross – Salford Red Devils

Continues to go under the radar, Deon Cross is becoming one of Salford’s main attacking outlets and he enjoyed a brilliant performance against Hull FC.

4. Konrad Hurrell – St Helens

In an incredibly difficult game, Konrad Hurrell stood up against Wigan. After suffering a painful hand injury, the Tongan international continued with massive runs.

5. Derrell Olpherts – Castleford Tigers

If Castleford are set to lose Derrell Olpherts as rumours suggest, then he will take some replacing. The winger not only scored twice but helped his team progress down the field with some big carries.

6. Will Smith – Hull FC

Though Hull went down to Salford on Thursday, one man certainly stood up to be counted for the Black and Whites and that was Will Smith who has impressed since joining the club.

7. Danny Richardson – Castleford Tigers

Once more stood up to get Castleford over the line against Warrington on Thursday, Danny Richardson is enjoying his rugby under Lee Radford and it is showing.

8. Liam Watts – Castleford Tigers

Has had his fair share of critics in 2022 after being banned for FIVE times, but Liam Watts had a great game against Warrington, combining masterfully with Joe Westerman in midfield.

9. Brad Dwyer – Leeds Rhinos

It is still remarkable to think that Leeds are getting rid of Brad Dwyer, with the hooker being in superb form to help the Rhinos over the line against Huddersfield on Wednesday.

10. Mike Cooper – Wigan Warriors

What a performance from veteran Mike Cooper in his first Saints-Wigan derby. Some huge hits and big runs left a number of Saints players on the ground.

11. Kallum Watkins – Salford Red Devils

Once more enjoying a devastating game, this time against Hull FC on Thursday as Salford closed on a play-off spot.

12. Chris McQueen – Huddersfield Giants

Chris McQueen is having a brilliant season for Huddersfield in 2022 and he enjoyed another big performance against Leeds despite the result.

13. Zane Tetevano – Leeds Rhinos

After enduring a difficult start to the 2022 season, Zane Tetevano has excelled for Leeds in recent weeks and stood up against Huddersfield on Wednesday night.

Substitutes

14. Joey Lussick – St Helens

When Saints needed some kind of impetus off the bench, Joey Lussick brought it. The hooker scored from dummy-half to give Saints hope last night.

15. David Fifita – Wakefield Trinity

He started on the bench but played most of the 80 minutes against Hull KR, David Fifita had an excellent last home game for Wakefield. The prop even kicked a superb conversion!

16. Fouad Yaha – Catalans Dragons

Grabbed yet another hat-trick as Catalans just about overcame Toulouse in the last French derby.

17. Ryan Brierley – Salford Red Devils

Unable to get in at the number one spot, Ryan Brierley just has to be included for his performance against Hull on Thursday.
