Super League Team of the Week: St Helens, Wigan Warriors, Castleford Tigers and Hull KR dominate

Well, that’s another round of Super League completed as we head into the business end of the season.

Proceedings started on Friday night when St Helens cast aside the Huddersfield Giants with ease in a 25-0, but Saints’ bitter rivals Wigan Warriors took the limelight with a huge 60-0 hammering of Hull FC.

Wind the clock forward to Saturday and Castleford Tigers were irrepressible in the heat at the Jungle with an important 35-22 triumph over Warrington Wolves, with Leeds Rhinos going down in the south of France to Toulouse Olympique in what proved to have massive consequences at the bottom of the Super League table.

That’s because Wakefield Trinity’s defeat to Hull KR this afternoon consigned Trinity to the bottom of the league whilst Salford Red Devils inflicted a surprise 32-6 defeat over Catalans Dragons.

But, just who should feature in the Team of the Week?

1. Jai Field – Wigan Warriors

What an incredible player Jai Field is. The Wigan fullback destroyed Hull FC on a number of occasions on Friday night and dotted down for two brilliant tries.

2. Bevan French – Wigan Warriors

Not to be outdone, however, Bevan French produced an incredible record-breaking performance against Hull. Seven tries, yes seven, from the livewire fullback-turned-winger etched him into Super League folklore.

3. Sam Wood – Hull KR

Not the flashiest of players, but does his job incredibly well and Sam Wood certainly proved his worth for Hull KR in the narrow win over Wakefield today.

4. Tim Lafai – Salford Red Devils

In a big afternoon for the Salford Red Devils, Tim Lafai stood up against some huge Catalans opponents to help his side register a brilliant win.

5. Matty Ashton – Warrington Wolves

Though on the wrong end of a a loss to Castleford, Matty Ashton was the shining light for the Wolves, scoring a try and having a hand in most of what Daryl Powell’s men did well – although that wasn’t too much.

6. Jack Welsby – St Helens

The talent of Jack Welsby is perhaps unrivalled in Super League. The St Helens man can create something out of nothing and is quickly carving out a reputation for himself as one of the most exciting players in world rugby league. Welsby enjoyed another strong performance in the demolition of Huddersfield.

7. Jonny Lomax – St Helens

It just had to be a St Helens duo in the halves for the Team of the Week with Jonny Lomax providing the key passes in Saints’ win over Huddersfield on Friday night. The halfback is truly the best halfback in Super League.

8. Liam Byrne – Wigan Warriors

How good is this man becoming for Wigan? The prop seems to have matured incredible in a year and put in another big performance against a huge Hull FC pack on Friday night.

9. Paul McShane – Castleford Tigers

Though his form has been out of sorts in 2022, Paul McShane was superb in Castleford’s win over Warrington, leading from the front and helping to push his side over the line with 12 men.

10. Jack Ormondroyd – Salford Red Devils

Jack Ormondroyd seems to have found a home at the AJ Bell Stadium and he put in another massive shift against a bigger Catalans pack today.

11. Kai Pearce-Paul – Wigan Warriors

Kai Pearce-Paul is an immense talent and he showed his worth again against Hull FC. Though others stole the headlines, Pearce-Paul certainly had a hand in everything Wigan did well.

12. Joe Batchelor – St Helens

A few years ago, no one would have expected Joe Batchelor to be linked with a place in Shaun Wane’s England squad, but the St Helens star has been in scintillating form and his performance against Huddersfield showed just why he is so highly thought of.

13. Joe Westerman – Castleford Tigers

Arguably one of Castleford’s best signings of 2022, Joe Westerman showed his inspiration in the Tigers’ big win over Warrington on Saturday. The forward also threw out some brilliant passes

Substitutes

14. Danny Richardson – Castleford Tigers

The Tigers halfback has had a mixed few years at Castleford but really seems to have taken to Lee Radford. And he produced a brilliant performance against Warrington on Saturday.

15. Agnatius Paasi – St Helens

What a find this blockbusting forward has been! Tongan international Agnatius Paasi is one of St Helens’ most destructive players and he devastated Huddersfield down the middle on Friday night.

16. Alex Sutcliffe – Castleford Tigers

It’s been injury hell for Alex Sutcliffe in 2022 since moving to the Castleford Tigers, but the dreadful spell came to a wonderful end against Warrington with a well-taken try to settle proceedings against Warrington on Saturday.

17. Jez Litten – Hull KR

Jez Litten has carved out a reputation for himself as one of the most dangerous off the bench and he was in excellent form against Wakefield today.
