Super League Team of the Week: Seven teams feature as one dominates

Round 18 of the Betfred Super League has come to a close and it was a huge weekend of rugby starting on Friday night with two huge games in the relegation battle as Wigan Warriors and Leigh Leopards were the obstacles for Wakefield Trinity and Castleford Tigers on Friday night whilst Warrington Wolves and St Helens met in a huge game.

On Sunday there were two huge games as Leeds Rhinos travelled to Salford Red Devils and Hull KR and Hull FC met in a huge derby.

On Saturday, Ian Watson’s Huddersfield Giants headed to Catalans Dragons.

The action started on Friday night with a huge clash between Warrington Wolves and St Helens at the Halliwell Jones.

It was a great game that seemed in the hands of the Wolves as they led 20-12 late in the game after amazing tries from Matty Ashton and Matt Dufty.

However, as the St Helens spine clicked into gear they found two key moments to turn the game on its head and claim the win.

Elsewhere on Friday night there was a huge shock result as Wakefield won in Golden Point against Wigan Warriors to heap the pressure on Castleford Tigers in the relegation battle as they came up short against Leigh Leopards.

Now just two points separate them and Wakefield at the bottom of the league.

Then on Saturday Huddersfield Giants stunned Catalans Dragons thanks to a brilliant brace from Chris McQueen. Meanwhile on Sunday the action concluded with a great win for Hull FC in the derby against Hull KR before Leeds picked up a vital win over Salford.

But who makes the team of the week?

Fullback: Jack Welsby (St Helens)
Perhaps the best player in the league on his day and it was his day against Warrington with the two assists that won the game for the Wolves whilst he had a key involvement in James Bell’s try.

Wingers: Adam Swift (Hull FC) & Matty Ashton (Warrington Wolves)
Two tries each for these two wingers and both scored excellent tries. They also nailed the basics of the game as you would always expect.

Centres: Rhyse Martin (Leeds Rhinos) & Tim Lafai (Salford Red Devils)
Tim Lafai scored a brilliant brace for Salford and was tough to handle for the Rhinos from start to finish. Meanwhile, Rhyse Martin was the match winner for Leeds and was key in the Rhinos’ building pressure.

Halfbacks: Jonny Lomax (St Helens) & Will Dagger (Wakefield Trinity)
Man of the Match against Warrington and a key try scorer, it is Jonny Lomax’s experience which could send Saints back to Old Trafford. Meanwhile, Will Dagger was the hero against Wigan nailing the Golden Point drop goal.

Props: Alex Walmsley (St Helens) & Chris Hill (Huddersfield Giants)
Alex Walmsley was the man who turned things around against Warrington with a destructive second stint that guided the Champions to a vital win. Meanwhile, Chris Hill had a similarly effective second half for the Giants as they defeated Catalans.

Hooker: Danny Houghton (Hull FC)
The Man of the Match in a famous derby day win. He came up with the pass that sealed it as Swift scored his second. It was a typical Houghton display.

Second-Rowers: Chris McQueen (Huddersfield Giants) & James McDonnell (Leeds Rhinos)
Two tries for Chris McQueen set the Giants on their way to a famous win in France, his second was a superb line and settled the matters. Meanwhile, James McDonnell was typically busy defensively in a game that saw the Rhinos win on the back of defence.

Loose-Forward: Morgan Knowles (St Helens)
Like Walmsley, Knowles’ second half against Warrington was a real turning point for the Champions as he got through plenty of work.
