Super League Team of the Week: One side dominates with five players

It has been another sensational weekend of Super League action.

It all started with a tight affair at Huddersfield Giants as they hosted Super League and World Champions St Helens at the John Smith’s Stadium.

A game between two high quality teams who execute the basics, it was a tight tussle edged by the Champions.

On Friday night, Wigan Warriors showed the class of their stars to turn around a 16-8 deficit into a 20-16 win.

Elsewhere, Warrington Wolves continued their sublime start to the season as Daryl Powell inflicted more misery on his former side the Castleford Tigers in a 38-0 win.

Castleford’s local rivals Wakefield Trinity didn’t have it much better as they lost 34-6 to Hull KR.

On Saturday we were treated to perhaps the game of the season as Leeds Rhinos pulled off a sensational comeback to defeat the previously unbeaten Catalans Dragons at home whilst newly promoted Leigh Leopards won away at Hull FC.

But who makes the team of the week?

Fullback: Matt Dufty (Warrington Wolves)
Dufty is in red hot form to start the season and he was again very impressive and very dangerous at the back as the Wolves won at the Jungle.

Wingers: Bevan French (Wigan Warriors) & Josh Charnley (Leigh Leopards)
Bevan French was a match winner and that sees him in this side. Without his two tries, the second of which turned the game, the Warriors would have lost to Salford. As for Josh Charnley, he bagged a brilliant hat-trick against Hull FC as Leigh won for the third time.

Centres: Konrad Hurrell (St Helens) & Rhyse Martin (Leeds Rhinos)
Two former teammates, Konrad Hurrell made excellent metres with some sublime carries against Huddersfield Giants. He also notched a try and an assist. Meanwhile, Rhyse Martin playing out of position couldn’t stop making breaks. He also took his try very well. That said, he had a difficult day with the boot.

Halfbacks: Blake Austin (Leeds Rhinos) & Mikey Lewis (Hull KR)
Blake Austin was sensational in the same game. Two of his kicks helped create tries, he came up with an assist for Derrell Olpherts, his break changed the game and he forced the goal line drop out that led to Leeds’ fourth try. His 40/20 gave Leeds the position to score the winner which he laid on a plate for Tom Holroyd. Meanwhile, Mikey Lewis was exceptional for Hull KR scoring two brilliant tries.

Props: Tom Holroyd (Leeds Rhinos) & Paul Vaughan (Warrington Wolves)
Tom Holroyd scored that lovely winning try and was great all round making metres and defending well. He is in brilliant form to start the season but perhaps no one is in better form than Paul Vaughan. He was again brilliant against Castleford.

Hooker: Jarrod O’Connor (Leeds Rhinos)
People will look to Austin’s involvement in winning Leeds the game but it was Jarrod O’Connor who changed the game at nine for the Rhinos bringing greater ruck speed to the game that helped them dominate.

Second-Rowers: Matt Whitley (Catalans Dragons) & Liam Farrell (Wigan Warriors)
Despite defeat, Matt Whitley didn’t miss a beat on his return to the side. He even had to move to centre and came up with a try saving tackle on Harry Newman. Liam Farrell meanwhile was brilliant as always for Wigan.

Loose-Forward: Cameron Smith (Leeds Rhinos)
Cameron Smith nailed the basics at 13 for Leeds as he always does on Saturday but his magic assist for Harry Newman underlined his ability to bring something extra to the Rhinos.
