Super League Team of the Week: Castleford Tigers, St Helens and Wigan Warriors dominate

Well, that’s another week of Super League done and dusted and what a weekend it was!

St Helens and Leeds Rhinos kicked things off on Thursday night with the former thrashing the latter, 42-12.

Wigan Warriors ended up hammering Toulouse Olympique on Friday night, with Warrington Wolves registering a quite bizarre 4-0 win over Hull FC – a game in which no tries were actually scored.

Fast forward to Sunday afternoon and Salford Red Devils inflicted one of the biggest drubbings in Super League history with a 74-10 triumph against Wakefield Trinity.

Huddersfield Giants were far too good for Hull KR, who lost three men to injury within the opening 15 minutes whilst Castleford Tigers had to rely on a Danny Richardson drop goal to finally overcome Catalans Dragons in dramatic circumstances at the Jungle.

But, who stood out?

1. Ryan Hampshire – Castleford Tigers

Ryan Hampshire has been in tremendous form for Castleford since making the mid-season switch and he was excellent again in the Tigers’ win over Catalans this afternoon.

2. Josh Thewlis – Warrington Wolves

Fresh after signing a new long-term deal at Warrington, Josh Thewlis was in brilliant form against Hull FC on Friday night and he probably should have had try but for a controversial forward pass call.

3. Konrad Hurrell – St Helens

What another fantastic game from the big man in the centre against Leeds on Thursday night. Konrad Hurrell really has been a good signing by Kristian Woolf and he touched down for a well-taken try.

4. Leroy Cudjoe – Huddersfield Giants

He just couldn’t be left out of this team despite playing on the right in the number 3 shirt. With a hat-trick under his belt and a superb performance, Leroy Cudjoe had an incredible game against Hull KR today.

5. Abbas Miski – Wigan Warriors

Given a chance by head coach Matty Peet, Abbas Miski did not disappoint against Toulouse on Friday night. The Lebanese winger registered four tries in an accomplished performance to certainly do his chances of continued selection no harm.

6. Joe Lovodua – Hull FC

Thrust in at the deep end following the departure of Josh Reynolds during the week, Hull FC’s Joe Lovodua impressed greatly despite the loss to Warrington. He really has been an incredible signing in 2022.

7. Danny Richardson – Castleford Tigers

Talk about playing with pressure; Danny Richardson was making his first appearance for Castleford since the first game of the season after sustaining a horror neck injury. The halfback, however,  had some pivotal touches including a 40/20 and the drop goal to win it.

8. Alex Walmsley – St Helens

This man mountain is the best forward in Super League. Alex Walmsley scored twice and destroyed Leeds up the middle on Thursday night for another brilliant knock in the pack.

9. Sam Powell – Wigan Warriors

This man is Wigan through and through and everything that the Warriors do well goes through Sam Powell. He again tore Toulouse to shreds on Friday night with some big and decisive runs out of dummy-half.

10. Chris Satae – Hull FC

Hull’s pack has been superb in 2022 – it’s in the backs where they have failed to launch any kind of consistent attack. But, with Chris Satae constantly getting them on the front foot against Warrington to no avail, FC fans will be wondering where their points are going to come from.

11. Liam Farrell – Wigan Warriors

Wigan’s number one player for a number of years, Liam Farrell again proved his worth in stunning fashion with a massive stint against Toulouse on Friday night. The second-rower even notched a try.

12. Chris McQueen – Huddersfield Giants

This man just gets better and better each week and Chris McQueen was in inspiring form against Hull KR this weekend.

13. Luke Yates – Huddersfield Giants

What a performance from this big man in Huddersfield’s win over Hull KR. Luke Yates scored a scintillating effort just after the break, sprinting 60 metres and taking on Lachlan Coote on the outside.

Substitutes

14. Joe Burgess – Salford Red Devils

He just had to be included following a hat-trick in Salford’s drubbing of Wakefield today – Joe Burgess is making quite a name for himself on the wing at the AJ Bell Stadium.

15. Matty Lees – St Helens

Matty Lees couldn’t displace Chris Satae as a starting prop in the Team of the Week, but the England international was in good form against Leeds on Thursday night, taking in some huge runs.

16. Marc Sneyd – Salford Red Devils

You can’t leave this man out of the Dream Team following a 22-point haul against Wakefield. Marc Sneyd controlled every part of the game alongside halfback partner Brodie Croft.

17. Agnatius Paasi – St Helens

Agnatius Paasi has earned a reputation for himself as one of the most destructive substitutes in the game, and Thursday night’s game against Leeds proved that. The Tongan international scored a try and made a nuisance of himself down the middle.
