Super League target Chanel Harris-Tavita makes shock decision on his future

Three Super League clubs were said to be monitoring New Zealand Warriors halfback Chanel Harris-Tavita.

The elusive halfback was also being chased by two NRL clubs, including the Canberra Raiders according to Fox Sports, but the Warriors also wanted to keep him.

It was a difficult proposition for the talented youngster, however, with Harris-Tavita low down in the pecking order at the Warriors currently – and the halfback had rejected a contract extension.

And, now he has made the huge decision to retire at the end of the season, aged just 23, to pursue a career outside of the sport.

Shaun Johnson is a big name, but the Warriors picked up new recruit Daejarn Asi from the North Queensland Cowboys two weeks and he has enjoyed a rich vein of form in recent weeks.

The Warriors have also signed sensation from Sydney Roosters, Ronald Volkman, on a three-year deal for the future so it would have been difficult for Harris-Tavita to earn a deal that he wanted.

It remains to be seen which three Super League clubs were in for Harris-Tavita with Castleford Tigers desperately needing some new blood at halfback with Jake Trueman being heavily linked with Hull FC.

Wigan Warriors’ legend Tommy Leuluai may retire at the end of 2022 which would leave a huge gap at the DW Stadium whilst Leeds Rhinos’ Blake Austin and Warrington Wolves’ Gareth Widdop are out of contract.
