Super League star’s season over

As the season draws to a close, Wigan Warriors are chasing top spot, Leeds Rhinos, Warrington Wolves, Hull FC, Hull KR and Salford Red Devils are fighting for play-off spots but at the bottom of the league Wakefield Trinity and Castleford Tigers are fighting for Super League survival.

Wakefield’s chances of survival were hurt by a defeat in the relegation Grand Final to Castleford Tigers and things are even worse.

They have been struck with some huge injury blows.

Mark Applegarth confirmed on BBC Radio Leeds: “Max is touch and go. We’ve got another fitness assessment with him tomorrow morning. He did some light running on it yesterday but he’s still feeling it a bit so I’m not sure, it’s going to be touch and go.

“Reece is definitely out for the season now. He’s got a grade two hamstring tear so he’ll be done for the year.

“There’s a lot of teams getting a few key blows at different times. So as it’s been all year, it’s next man up and a good chance for whoever comes in to showcase what they can do.

“I feel for Reece, he’s had a bit of an up and down year with his injuries. He was just starting to get a sustained run in the team but unfortunately that’s nature of the beast in professional sport. I’m sure he’ll come back a bit stronger from it.”

On his options, he said: “We’ve got quite a few obviously. We’ve still got Jack Croft in the squad, Romain Franco too.

“It’s a good chance for one of them to step up and showcase what they can do. They’ve been waiting patiently for a chance. Both of them played well in the reserve game a couple of weeks ago.

“I’m looking forward to seeing one of them to showcase what they can do on Sunday.”

Wakefield take on St Helens this week in a vital game for both sides.

Castleford Tigers meanwhile take on Warrington Wolves on Sky Sports as the relegation battle reaches a crucial tipping point as the season draws to a close.
