Today we will see a huge semi-final clash at Warrington Wolves’ Halliwell Jones Stadium between Leigh Leopards and St Helens.
It is second vs fourth in the league but remarkably it is also a newly promoted side up against the Super League and World Champions.
These two sides were arguably the teams of 2022. Leigh lost only twice last year only losing to Featherstone Rovers in Round Two as Adrian Lam and Chris Chester worked to put together a new squad before losing in the Challenge Cup against Hull KR.
St Helens of course picked up a fourth consecutive Super League title and finished top of Super League.
Now they meet with a place at Wembley up for grabs. For Leigh it is all about a fairytale, for St Helens it is adding to their legacy.
In a blow for Saints however they have lost both James Roby and Mark Percival.
This will put the pressure on Joey Lussick but a story has been developing with the Sydney Morning Herald reporting that St Helens hooker Joey Lussick is being targeted by former club the Parramatta Eels.
The Eels want to bring in the hooker immediately to ease their injury woes.
This comes as former Hull KR hooker Josh Hodgson deals with an injury of his own having made the move from Canberra Raiders last year having missed his last year through injury.
Saints have targeted Warrington’s Daryl Clark for 2024 as his replacement but would also have to work to replace Lussick.
That has now been achieved according to the Daily Telegraph allowing Parramatta to pull the trigger on their move for Lussick.
This is because, according to the Daily Telegraph, the Saints are set to sign Moses Mbye and allow Lussick to leave.
The Daily Telegraph has also reported that he has begun negotiations with the Eels for an immediate move which will also include a contract for the 2024 season as well.
They reported:
“Eels officials are in negotiations to bring Australian schoolboys hooker Joey Lussick back to the club.
“Parramatta powerbrokers are hoping to strike a deal within the next 72 hours. The offer would also include a contract for 2024.
“Lussick, 27, played nine NRL games with the Eels in 2021 before signing with the English Super League giants, St Helens.
“His familiarity with the Eels system, the players and the coaching staff is a major lure for Parramatta to try and drop Lussick immediately back into the club’s first grade side.”
This means that today’s game could be Lussick’s last in the UK.
