Super League star’s frank honesty about NRL transfer

Many Super League sides have been chased by NRL clubs in recent times at Leeds Rhinos, Wigan Warriors, Warrington Wolves, St Helens and Hull FC.

We have seen Leeds’ halfbacks Aidan Sezer and Blake Austin linked with returns down under whilst the Rhinos are linked with former Huddersfield Giants star Danny Levi.

His former teammate Will Pryce is headed to Newcastle Knights alongside Wigan’s Kai Pearce-Paul.

Warrington will not be losing George Williams after they signed him to a long term deal after interest from Wests Tigers who have also been linked with Lewis Dodd who alongside Jack Welsby has been linked with a move to the NRL.

Halfbacks though seem to be the focus with Leigh Leopards’ Lachlan Lam linked with Canberra Raiders and Salford Red Devils’ Brodie Croft linked with Wests.

Meanwhile, Jake Clifford at Hull FC has been chased by NRL clubs for the last few weeks.

One of Super League’s most in form players, Clifford has looked like the best number seven in Super League.

Following this former Hull FC and Hull KR star Paul Cooke said he could return to the NRL and now a club has entered the race to sign him in the shape of his former club the North Queensland Cowboys.

The Daily Telegraph reported:

“Wests Tigers have been offered Jake Clifford but a North Queensland homecoming looms more likely for the ex-Cowboys and Newcastle playmaker

“Clifford joined Hull FC this year but is expected to return to the NRL in 2024.

“The Cowboys have discussed signing the 25-year-old to add some depth to their halves.”

Now Jon Wells has reported on Sky Sports that the North Queensland Cowboys have made an offer for the halfback.

It has now been reported by the Hull Daily Mail that he has agreed to this offer.

This should come as no surprise to Hull FC fans with Clifford frank about his ambitions when he signed.

“I guess in the future I want to try and get back into the NRL. I think this has been a bit of a reverse direction towards that,” he said to BBC Radio Humberside in January.

“In my contract if an NRL club did offer. I am still only 25 and I still have a lot of good footy left ahead of me.

“I feel like I can start that under Tony and that is what I am here to do and I am here to get the club back into the play-offs and bring some silverware home.”
