Super League star wants this out of the sport immediately

Shaun Kenny-Dowall is back just in time to lead his team in the Hull derby on Good Friday.

The centre is of course Hull KR captain and part of their potent left edge and ahead of the derby he appeared on The Bench Podcast.

On the podcast, he was asked which element of rugby league does he want to see benched which essentially means taken out of the game.

For SKD, it was simple: he wants the cannonball tackle outlawed from the game.

For those that don’t know, this is when a player his held up in the tackle and another defender comes in and hits the leg at force at or below the knee.

On this, Kenny-Dowall said: “My ‘on the bench’ is the cannonball tackle.

“Mate when people come in below the knee it’s just horrible, my spine tingles every time someone does it.

“They’ve got to clamp down on it more.

“I just think having awareness as players about not going below the knee. If you’re going to go for the legs, go higher than the knee because it’s a massive risk for injury.

“Every time I see someone go down the spine tingles.”

Jon Wilkin then said: “Why’s it even in there anyway, just get it out.

This was when the centre said the tackle wasn’t policed harshly enough: “They do police it but not enough, I’ve seen some these last few weeks.”
