Super League star set to be offered new contract

Clubs like Leeds Rhinos, Wigan Warriors, Warrington Wolves and Hull KR have all confirmed major signings for 2024 but the other side of assembling a squad is deciding who you want to keep.

There has been a lot of talk around players who could retire and players who could move clubs especially at Huddersfield Giants.

The Giants have some great older players out of contract like Jermaine McGillvary, Leroy Cudjoe and 2022 Lance Todd Trophy winner Chris McQueen.

The club have decisions to make on all of these players and Ian Watson has addressed this speaking to the press: “Yeah, yeah, it’s the leadership group that determine a hell of a lot within your club and determine how you go.

“If you can get your leadership group kind of performing, then generally the younger players follow them because they see them as examples and as role models and they follow their performances.

“The guys over the last month, all them guys you’ve spoken about, have been first class, have been really kind of playing at the peak powers if you like. So it took a little bit of a while this year to get them all firing at the same time but at the moment they seem to all be on their front foot together. So long may that continue.”

He also all but confirmed that Cudjoe would be offered a contract for next year:

“Yeah, I’ve spoken to the club and told them that Leroy for us is someone that we want to keep within this team and this squad as well. I just think the club are obviously sorting a few things out.

“I know Richard’s on with the process of speaking to Leroy and Leroy will be here.

“He’s just done his 350. I think he’s trying to get to 400 and then 500. We’ll just keep battling on with him and see where we get to.”

He also gave an update on Chris McQueen:

“Yeah, like I say, we’ve had dialogue, so we both know where we are as well. So like I say, he’s enjoying what he’s doing at the moment, which is really pleasing. So don’t want to start confusing that with talks as well.

“Just let him play and let him be what he is, and then we’ll see what happens on the end of that.”
