As Leeds Rhinos, Warrington Wolves, Hull KR and Salford Red Devils battle for play off spots and Wigan Warriors battle for the League Leaders’ Shield, Wakefield Trinity have been battling with Castleford Tigers for survival at the bottom of Super League.
Trinity, after defeat to Catalans Dragons, seem set for relegation and need two wins from two, two defeats from two from Castleford and a big points difference swing to secure safety.
They will have to do so without David Fifita after the prop returns to Australia for the birth of his child which has been confirmed by the club.
As announced by the Big Bopper himself last week, after accumulating over 150 Trinity appearances, his professional career will end following the conclusion of the 2023 season.
Fifita answered the SOS call from Head Coach Mark Applegarth and made a dramatic return to Wakefield Trinity, featuring in our Magic Weekend clash against Leigh Leopards.
It wouldn’t take long for the Fifita influence to become apparent, as one-week later Trinity would be victorious over Leeds Rhinos at Belle Vue, picking up our first points of the season.
Off of the pitch he continued his hard work with Crigglestone All Blacks, turning up to their training sessions and helping however he could. He returned to Trinity as a hero and will leave as a legend.
“I personally can’t thank Dave enough for coming over how he did and helping continue our fight for survival in this league.” said Mark Applegarth.
“It shows the mark of his character and him as a person.
“We wish him and his family all the best with their new addition and I’m sure everybody understands that family comes first.”
The Big Bopper returned during Magic Weekend and his impact was immediately seen as he took a huge carry that incited Leigh Leopards playmaker to throw a punch at the returning forward.
Sadly for Trinity they couldn’t capitalise after Reynolds red card but did instead go on a run of four wins in six which made their survival hopes look a realistic prospect.
Defeat to Castleford and subsequent losses have all but ended those chances but for Fifita he confirmed his status as a club legend, giving his all to save his beloved club for whom he played 153 times over two separate spells.
