Super League star “had to” leave current club

After some big signing news for this season recently with Leeds Rhinos letting Blake Austin join Castleford Tigers and Tyler Dupree joining Wigan Warriors, we have seen some major signing news for next season.

Former Salford Red Devils star and St Helens Grand Final winner Theo Fages will leave Huddersfield Giants to join Catalans Dragon in 2024.

Following this news, Director of Rugby Richard Thewlis has addressed the loss of Fages who reportedly had an option in his contract to extend his deal.

Thewlis said that it was “a deal that had to happen.”

“Whilst on the face of this it’s disappointing news for us, the reality is that it’s a deal that had to happen and we are delighted for Theo that Catalans were able to come in and enable him to continue playing back in France,” Thewlis revealed.

“Theo has kept us fully in the loop with all his news at home and we were prepared for this eventuality. We will be making our announcements regarding our 2024 playing roster when it’s right for all concerned.”

Fages will bring an end to his two-year stay at the Giants, as he returns home to France to join Steve McNamara’s Dragons in 2024.

Joining the club in 2022 from St Helens, Theo played a role in guiding the Giants to a top 3 finish in the regular season.

Theo has made 21 appearances in Super League so far for the Giants, and is on track in his return from injury, still fully committed to finishing the season on a high.

Ian Watson, Huddersfield Giants Head Coach wished Theo well as he returns home to France at the end of 2023.

“I would like to start by thanking Theo for the last two years he is a player and person who I hold in the highest regard.

“I would have loved Theo to have continued on the journey we discussed when signing him but unfortunately there has been a lot of things for Theo and his family to have dealt with over the last 2 years.

“Theo has been a model professional and person and we all support him in the decision he has now made and wish him all the very best in his new venture with Catalans.”

Théo Fages said: “I’m very happy and excited to sign for Catalans Dragons! I can’t wait to wear the club’s jersey. It will be an honor to wear the shirt in front of my family, friends, and fans. I’m proud to have the opportunity to join this great squad. I will do my best to bring back home many trophies for the club”.

Born in Catalonia, he started rugby league at the academy of Pia before he moved to Salford at the age of 16 to join the Red Devils’ academy. He quickly became a regular starter in Super League and made his professional debut in 2013 at 18 years-old. After 3 full seasons with Salford, the French playmaker signed for St Helens, where he won 3 times the Super League and the Challenge Cup.
