Super League star “gutted” after teammate’s England omission

Ash Handley has had to wait a long time for a full England cap.

A lot was made in 2019 when he travelled halfway across the world to play for Great Britain only for Blake Austin to start on the wing instead of the Leeds Rhinos star.

He crowned his first cap with a hat-trick and also a hat-trick of assists.

Speaking after the game he said:

“I’ve really enjoyed it obviously. It’s a great experience to be involved in and like you say I’ve been waiting a while for it to come. I’m really happy with how it’s gone.”

A long time coming, he was asked if he feared he would miss another opportunity when he picked up a mid-season injury.

He said:

“Maybe so. I didn’t think too much about this international week, I was just focusing on getting myself right and playing again so I was just trying to get my body right and be back as soon as I could for Leeds.”

However, there was one Leeds player left out who many felt should have been included: Cam Smith.

On this, Handley said: “Obviously I want as many of the players that I play with to get picked as well but that’s not really down to me, it’s down to Waney.

“I was gutted for him but he knows that he just needs to keep pushing on and keep playing well for Leeds and hopefully he’ll get his chance.”
