Super League star “craves” NRL move according to Australian outlet

Sione Mata’utia is the youngest player to ever represent Australia and thus has been around at the highest level much longer than most players his age.

He has already done a lot.

The former Newcastle Knights player left the NRL behind for St Helens at the end of 2020 and was part of the Saints’ double winning side of 2021 before taking on the number 11 shirt in 2022 and helping Saints to a fourth consecutive title.

His contract expires at the end of 2023 and there have already been rumours that he could be headed back to the NRL.

Now the Newcastle Herald has claimed the second “craves a swansong” with his former the club the Knights.

This comes after the former Knights skipper appeared on Toohey’s News Podcast and the forward told report Barry Toohey that “he still idolises the club and would love to wear the red and blue again. He even revealed he’s still a Knights member.”

Whether the Knights will make a move for the Super League star remains to be seen but it seems that Mata’utia would himself be keen on the move.

It will be interesting to see how St Helens address this area of their team with both Mata’utia and Curtis Sironen coming to the ends of their current deals with the club.

Joe Batchelor is settled at the club for the long term but this seems like an area the Saints will need to address either with retentions or recruitment.

Last night Mata’utia was shown a yellow card in golden point against Leeds Rhinos but with Leeds already down to 12 men the Saints still found a way to win.
