Super League star could be set for exit

We have seen the likes of Leeds Rhinos, Wigan Warriors, Warrington Wolves, Hull FC and Hull KR make moves to keep their top stars for 2024 and beyond.

Leeds have awarded new deals to Ash Handley, Jarrod O’Connor, Nene MacDonald, Sam Lisone and Justin Sangare.

Wigan recently gave a new deal to young hooker Brad O’Neill as he becomes a key part of their future.

Warrington fended off NRL interest in George Williams and Paul Vaughan with new deals and Hull FC have kept on many of their home grown stars as well as Ligi Sao.

Hull KR last week announced that George King has extended his stay at the club as well.

However, at Huddersfield Giants there has been a suggestion that Jermaine McGillvary has yet to receive a contract offer from the club.

Ian Watson addressed matters saying:

“Yeah, I think so mate,” Watson said as he confirmed that there was no deal on the table right now and that it was a decision that would go down to the wire.

The conversation with everyone was a real honest and open conversation. Just to say the amount of games that he’s been missing, the injuries he’s been picking up.

“You never know, but I tell you, you look at his performance last week. You’re signing him all day long on the back of that performance.

“I think that’s for Jez to just keep turning out them kind of performances, play like that and then everything else takes care of itself. I’ve said it a number of times before, you play well and it’s all in your own control.

“If you’re not playing so well then obviously it’s about opinions and obviously selections and choices that other people have to make around you.”

However, it is a very different story for Leroy Cudjoe: “Yeah, well obviously there’s a break after this so hopefully like I say we do our job and then the club can get down and start kind of looking at a couple of them but hopefully Leroy gets sorted out pretty quickly mate.

“Leroy will be here next year with us, he’s a great bloke, he’s great for the group, he’s a great character.”

Meanwhile, it seems Chris McQueen could be set for an exit as well or more likely retirement with Ian Watson revealing the second-row is the one who has the decision to make:

“We’re speaking to Crispy about what we see and what he sees. He’ll be the one that makes a decision and will let everyone know what he’s going to do,” he said on BBC Radio Leeds.

“We’ve given him our thoughts about where we’re at and where we think he’s at. He’s had a chat with us about what he’s looking at. The decision will come from Crispy eventually.”
