Super League sides sweat disciplinary as 9 sin binned including Leeds Rhinos and Wigan Warriors stars

Super League disciplinary

A total of nine players were shown a yellow card during Magic Weekend as the showpiece event of Super League took place and after such misdemeanours, several sides will be concerned about today’s disciplinary verdict.

Last week a total of three players were handed bans including Wigan Warriors’ Harry Smith who copped a three-game ban for his elbow on Leeds’ James Bentley.

Both Josh Charnley and Morgan Knowles also copped bans after the Match Review Panel found them guilty and the panel will once again have their work cut out today.

The action started on Saturday with London Broncos defeating Hull FC 29-4 in a game described by Simon Grix as “Championship-level”. Next up was a game of ‘Champion-level’ as Wigan Warriors beat St Helens 20-0 to return to the top of Super League.

Even without the suspended Harry Smith, Wigan’s attack ticked with young Jack Farrimond seizing the limelight at Magic Weekend before Matt Dufty also made a claim after his hattrick in Warrington’s 24-6 victory over Leeds Rhinos.

That’s a Super League game that will be looked at carefully by the discussion panel after three yellow cards were shown, including one very controversial one that Brad Arthur criticised.

Sunday’s action saw three more one-sided games with Leigh keeping their playoff hopes alive with a 26-0 win over Salford, Hull KR reclaimed the top spot after seeing off Catalans 36-4 and Huddersfield wrapping the event up with a 20-12 win over Castleford.

Like Saturday, Sunday saw more disciplinary issues including an incident that was placed on report with six different Super League sides saw players carded across the weekend.

Of those six teams, three have two players that were shown yellow as Leeds Rhinos, Salford Red Devils and Huddersfield Giants all saw the wrath of the referee’s cards.

David Fusitu’a’s yellow was very controversial as he was deemed to have made a professional foul on Matty Ashton before Sam Lisone and Rodrick Tai both went off following a shoulder charge on Lisone that saw him lash out.

Earlier in the day Kaide Ellis went for ten for a high tackle with Denive Balmforth copping a yellow in the very last minute of game one for a very late hit.

Onto Sunday and Salford saw two players sin binned leaving them with 11 players on the field as both Ethan Ryan and Brad Singleton landed high shots, the same offence that both Tui Lolohea and Fenton Rogers of Huddersfield committed.

The Super League disciplinary focus will be on the man who didn’t get sin binned though as Cesar Rouge was placed on report after allegations that he had bit Mikey Lewis, something Lewis explained post-match to Sky Sports as he stated he would leave the issue to the RFL.

We’ll find out later today if the Match Review Panel take action on any of those carded players or any others.
