Super League side winning race for Canberra Raiders flyer

Super League signing Nick Cotric

With the Super League season heading into the international break, clubs have another opportunity to assess their squads, as the season begins the long turn into the home stretch. Clubs may use this opportunity to enter the transfer market to conclude their business.

Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Tom Burgess have already confirmed moves to Hull KR and the Huddersfield Giants respectively, as clubs have looked to move early to complete their transfer business for next season.

A number of high-profile names from the NRL have been linked with a move to Super League in recent weeks. The Wests Tigers are believed to still be looking to offload players such as John Bateman, Jayden Sullivan and Brent Naden, whilst Canberra Raiders’ Elliot Whitehead looks set to make a return to the Catalans Dragons for 2025, along with Luke Keary.

Now, reports suggest that another Canberra player may be set to make the move to Super League for 2025 in the coming days.

According to the Canberra Times, the Catalans Dragons are winning the race to sign Nick Cotric, whose contract with Canberra is set to expire at the end of the season. According to the report, the Dragons have offered Cotric a three-year deal to move to Perpignan for 2025. The report states:

“Super League club Catalans Dragons is leading the race to land Nick Cotric, the Canberra Raiders winger expected to make a decision on his future early this week.

“Cotric was still weighing up his options on Sunday after reports emerged from England the 25-year-old was set to join the Dragons. Catalans have offered him a three-year deal, which would take him through until the end of 2027.

“His Raiders contract runs out at the end of this season, with the Green Machine having offered a two-year extension to the outside back.

“But negotiations stalled and the offer was taken off the table, the Raiders intending to resume negotiations at a later date.”

The Catalans Dragons are in the market for a winger, as they will lose both of their starting options in the close season. Tom Johnstone will return to ambitious Championship side, Wakefield Trinity, and Tom Davies will join high-flying Hull KR.

The Dragons have already filled one of those spots with the signing of Tommy Makinson, who leaves St Helens after a long and distinguished career with the Merseyside club. However, this leaves one vacancy in the Catalans squad to fill.

They have been linked with several high-profile names from the NRL, including Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and Daniel Tupou, but it appears Cotric has moved to the top of their list of targets. Cotric had 62 tries in 148 NRL appearances, including three tries in seven appearances this year.

He has played most of his career with Canberra, barring a one year stint with the Canterbury Bulldogs in 2021.
