Super League side learn fate as £330,000 man makes decision over potential move

Damien Cook
Super League sides return to action this weekend and, for those sides not involved in the Challenge Cup, the break has afforded them an opportunity to take stock on their season so far. Many clubs will have conducted mid-season reviews in the pause to understand their priorities moving forward.

Clubs across Super League are scouring the transfer market, both domestically and abroad, as they look to strengthen their squads for the remainder of 2024, and for next season. A number of big names in the NRL have been linked to Super League in recent weeks, including Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, Daniel Tupou, David Armstrong and Jayden Sullivan.

However, as yet, none of these players have officially secured a move to the UK for next season. Yesterday, news broke linking hooker, Damien Cook, with a move to the UK. Now he has provided a major update on his future while speaking to the Australian Press.

It was reported that the Huddersfield Giants had made an offer for Cook, but they faced competition from St George Illawarra. Now, speaking to Channel Nine Wide World of Sport, Cook has opened up on his future, and his desire to remain with the Rabbitohs.

Cook confirmed that here had been interest from other sides, however, his focus is on his performances with South Sydney, and he would ideally remain with the club. Cook said:

“Pretty nice of them. They’re going to put an offer in. I haven’t spoke to my manager about that but it’s good to see they think I’ve got plenty of footy, which I do think,” Cook explained, discussing the offers which have been made.

“For me I’ve still got another year to go here and I love this club, they’ve been great to me.”

Cook then goes on to explain the difficulties he would face in leaving the Rabbitohs to Channel Nine. He has built a life around the club, with his family settled in the area. Any move away from South Sydney would represent a major upheaval.

“They’ve been everything. It’s where I’ve started a family, bought a house, all that sort of stuff,” He said.

“All my big moments have been at this great club. I’ve made no decision whatsoever. Obviously it’s a bit new to me, this sorts of stuff, and I don’t want to leave.

“But we’ll just get through the game and speak to my manager next week.”

Huddersfield are struggling for form in their Super League campaign and a run of poor results has seen them slip back from contention for the top six. Yesterday, Ian Watson revealed that the club were potentially willing to allow half-back, Jake Connor to leave on a short-term deal, having fallen out of the first-team picture.
