Super League side could lose star player to surgery

Wigan Warriors

Wigan Warriors make the short trip to Leigh Sports Village to face the Leigh Leopards on tonight in front of what’s expected to be a packed-out stadium.

Whilst this game was always going to be interesting given it’s the so-called ‘Battle of the Borough’ it wasn’t a given at the start of the season in regards to competitiveness.

Many expected Leigh to struggle in their first campaign back in Super League and the trend of promoted teams going straight back down also hindered their hopes.

Despite that the Leopards have been brilliant upon their return and are actually only two points behind Wigan, sitting on three wins from six compared to Wigan’s four wins.

The team news is now in and Matt Peet has made a huge call in dropping halfback Cade Cust after taking him off mid-way through the game last week.

Jai Field joins Harry Smith in the halves, Bevan French moves to fullback with Abbas Miski on the wing.

Meanwhile, Joe Shorrocks plays against the club he played for just a week ago after returning to Wigan after impressing at Leigh on loan in recent weeks.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Peet has explained that Cust hasn’t been dropped but is injured:

“It ended up not being a big decision to make, Cade has been playing through pain recently and we think for a bit of time.

“It was an easy decision for us to make. They played really well last week and they have plenty of threat.

“It is an option that we have had for a long time and used quite a bit. Yes mostly part way through games, but today we will go from the start.”

Peet went on to explain the injury:

“He has a bulging disc in his neck. He has been playing with it for a while but scans have come back and he has another meeting Friday and we will find out if it is an operation of just rest.”
